My Favorite Decorative Pillows & Cushions for Small Spaces

I always use decorative pillows in my designs—they’re one of the easiest and most impactful ways to transform a space. Pillows can introduce color and texture into a monochromatic room, soften clean lines, and add those final finishing touches that make a space feel intentional and inviting.

Decorative pillows are a must on both sofas and beds. They help break up large pieces of furniture, add visual depth, and create a more layered look without taking up any additional square footage. In small spaces especially, this kind of visual interest goes a long way.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with placement. Oversized floor pillows are one of my favorite small-space tricks—they provide extra seating without the bulk of chairs and can easily be moved or tucked away when not in use. They’re perfect for apartments where flexibility is key and every item needs to earn its keep.

I also love incorporating poufs. Poufs are incredibly versatile and work overtime in small homes. They can be used as a footrest, pulled up as extra seating when guests arrive, or even styled as a casual side table with a tray on top. That kind of triple-duty functionality is exactly what you want in a compact space.

Below are my favorite decorative pillows and poufs that add style, comfort, and function—while still being practical for small-space living.

Turkish Silk Pillow by CB2

This season, CB2 has been spot on with their line of Turkish silk pillows. These pillows instantly elevate a space with their rich texture and luxurious feel. While many high-end silk pillows are spot-clean only, these can be dry cleaned, making them much more practical for everyday living. They’re available as cover-only or with a down or down-alternative insert at a reasonable price point. If you don’t have allergies, I highly recommend the down insert for the best shape, softness, and overall look.

Pairing a solid, textured pillow with your statement (“wow”) pillows creates a strong visual base and keeps the look from feeling too busy. I love balancing bold patterns or silk accents with something grounded and tactile. This budget-friendly option from Amazon in a charcoal bouclé is a great choice—it adds depth, feels cozy, and works with almost any color palette.

This West Elm patchwork pillow brings a fun, vintage-inspired vibe, but it pairs surprisingly well with modern decor too. The mix of colors adds visual interest and instantly brightens up a space, making it a great way to introduce pattern without overwhelming a small room.

When purchasing multiple pillows, be sure to mix different shapes and sizes to keep things visually interesting. A long lumbar pillow works beautifully in a bedroom—it adds structure and looks great layered in front of standard pillows. For a sofa, I recommend a shorter lumbar pillow so it doesn’t overpower the seating area while still providing support and style.

Cici’s favorite pouf is a jute pouf from Amazon, and it’s easy to see why. The neutral beige tone and natural texture truly go with everything, making it one of the most versatile pieces you can add to a small space. We have both the large and small versions, and they’ve truly stood the test of time—perfect as extra seating, a footrest, or even a casual side table.

As far as I’m concerned, bean bag chairs have never gone out of fashion—you just have to choose the right one. While this version is technically a kids’ chair, it works perfectly in a small space and can be easily moved around as needed. I love the cream corduroy option because it’s durable and blends effortlessly with surrounding furniture and finishes.
